I Did Not Know That
Week 21: Walking in the shoes of the homeless and unemployed
Earlier today, I presented the Bill of Rights for the Homeless to Mayor Taveras at the Civil Rights Roundtable held at Casey Family Services. I asked the mayor a two part question:
- If he was aware that individuals in one of the Providence homeless shelters were being harassed, intimidated, bullied, and verbally, emotionally, and mentally abused by staff and
- Would he be open to supporting our proposed Bill of Rights for the Homeless as a solution to protecting these individuals from such treatment.
His response?
“I actually thought you were going to say they were being bullied by other individuals in the shelter. No, I did not know that was happening. But I would be happy to work with you on this and address the problem.”
We will see what happens next.
The Mayor and his Policy Director had agreed to come to present the new administration’s civil rights agenda. At this meeting, attendees heard the mayor’s ideas and expressed what they saw as the most pressing civil rights needs.
